Since the mid '80's I have been working with bands in the studio producing records. Most of my work is with bands that play live and singer songwriters that really want to have a 'band sound'. I use all of my experience as a producer, band leader (Roscoe's Gang), band member (Del-Lords, Yayhoos), sideman (Steve Earle & the Dukes, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts), session player (Run DMC/Everlast, Keri Noble, Mojo Nixon, Casey Neil, Syd Straw) songwriter and occasional engineer to help everyone in the room get to the place where they can do a really great job. I believe in the power of live tracks and analog and I also love the flexibility that digital brings us so we use both mediums and try to remember the two main rules of recording. 1. There is no rule. 2 . See rule number #1.
In January of 2000 longtime friend and colaborator Tim Hatfield and I set up our own workshop style recording studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at Cowboy Technical Services. Recent clients at CTS include Miss Ohio, Tandy, Marah, Jim White, Joe Flood, Chris Harford, the Damnwells, Robert Randolph, the Demolition String Band, the Silos, Marshall Crenshaw, the Yayhoos, Jim Duffy, Wili Jones, Keri Noble, The Last Town Chorus, Kasey Anderson,, The Dirty 30's, Western Paradise, Ryan Adams and Steve Earle & the Dukes. We've surrounded ourself with great analog and digital gear, room treatments and instruments that enable great things to happen. In January of 2009 moved the studio and merged with Brad Albetta at Monkeyboy. The new CTS revolves around a 1985 custom Calrec recording console built for the BBC. Lately in addition to full production of records from start to finish we have been doing a lot of record mixing for clients all over the world. Feel free to contact us about mixing your record. At the new CTS Tim Hatfield and I just finished mixing tracks that were recorded in Portland, OR for the new Kasey Anderson record at Jackpot with his band and mixed tracks that were recorded at SUMA Recording in Painesville, OH for the Jack Fords. Recently finised records with a great group from rainy Manchester UK called the Travelling Band. Working on a new record with Mark McKay. Mixed the new Mop Tops (fom Sweden) record. Mixed the New Heathens, Steve Earle bassist Kelley Looney. I've got the first solo record Chip Robinson (Backsliders) record done and I'm excited about it! Currently mixing records from Ted Morris (Sweden) and Robbing Mary (Cleveland, OH)
